Media Literacy

                                                            What is media literacy?

One of the lessons learned in Read 411 this semester is media literacy and how it relates to role media plays in our every day lives.  We discussed a project in which art teachers instructed students on dissecting newspaper articles in an effort to see how media messages are used to persuade its audience.  It opened the eyes of the students to see that commercial advertising is used to get its audience to buy things, public relations organizations promote a positive or negative image of a organization or government and advocacy groups try to persuade us to see things from a particular view point.  This would be an excellent project to adapt for the internet, television, Facebook and other technologies that students use on a daily basis.  Below is a great YouTube video I found that expounds on the issue of Media Literacy as it pertains to the news.

  1. I am inedibly astounded as I just finished watching both videos. I didn't realize it at first but the media has such a profound impact on us then we would like to admit. Media literacy is tricky in the sense that it's all informative but bias. Take the recent abuse commercial that's out and expanding to the media. It depicts an image of a boy with the message saying that kids around the world are abused. The kicker to this is that's the message it says at a height an adult can read it, but for a kid that's height is less than 4'10, it shows a image of a kid with abuse marks and scares and tells a message stating if you're being abused, call this number that's listed. It gives the kid an incentive to contact proper authorities if he's with the abuser. The adult or abuser wouldn't be able to see it but the kid will. It's amazing how marketing and 3D images are shaping up in the world... it's only a matter of time before craziness abrupts.
